Keyword
A word or phrase that users type into search engines — and that you optimise your content or ads around.
What is Keyword?
A keyword is any word or phrase that a user types (or speaks) into a search engine when looking for information, a product, or a service. In digital marketing, keywords are the foundation of both SEO and PPC strategy. In SEO, you research which keywords your target audience uses, then create content that answers those queries so that Google ranks your pages for those terms. In Google Ads, you bid on keywords to show ads when users search for those terms. Keywords are classified by several dimensions. By intent: informational keywords ("what is domain authority") signal a user wants to learn; navigational keywords ("Madsun Media contact") signal a user is looking for a specific brand; transactional keywords ("digital marketing agency Ludhiana") signal a user is ready to take action. By length: short-tail keywords (1-2 words: "SEO services") are high-volume but highly competitive; long-tail keywords (3+ words: "affordable SEO services for small business in Ludhiana") are lower-volume but highly specific and often convert better. By match type in Google Ads: Broad Match captures searches with related terms and synonyms; Phrase Match captures searches containing your keyword phrase; Exact Match captures only that specific search query. Keyword research is the foundation of all search marketing strategy. Tools like Google Keyword Planner, Semrush, Ahrefs, and Ubersuggest help identify search volumes, competition levels, and related keywords.
Targeting the right keywords is the difference between attracting visitors who buy and visitors who bounce. A dental clinic ranking for "tooth pain relief" attracts informational searchers; ranking for "emergency dentist Sydney open Sunday" attracts patients ready to book right now.
A B2B software company in Bangalore was targeting the keyword "CRM software" (2.2M monthly searches, very high competition). By shifting focus to long-tail keywords like "CRM software for real estate agents India" and "CRM for small business under 5000 INR", they achieved page 1 rankings in 4 months at far lower competition.
