Four Things Killing Most AU Law Firm Marketing
We have onboarded enough Australian solicitors, barristers and law firms to see the same four problems on repeat. If even one of these sounds like your practice, you are losing high-value clients every week.
Paying $200+ per lead from referral networks
Referral directories send the same enquiry to ten competing firms simultaneously. You pay the platform, chase the prospective client, lose the quote war, and repeat. The cost per actual retained client ends up three or four times what the platform quotes you upfront.
Legal advertising restrictions killing your reach
Australian Consumer Law and the Legal Profession Uniform Law impose strict rules on legal advertising — no misleading conduct, no prohibited comparative claims. Generic ad copy gets rejected by Google or wastes budget on unqualified clicks. Most agencies have no idea these rules exist.
High-value clients researching online but not calling
Someone facing a property dispute or family law matter does weeks of online research before picking up the phone. If your website lacks credibility signals — awards, barrister profiles, detailed practice area content — they choose the firm that looks more authoritative, even if you are the better solicitor.
Competing against national firms with massive budgets
Large national firms dominate broad legal keywords with six-figure monthly ad spends. The good news: most of their budget goes to broad national terms. A well-structured local SEO and suburb-specific Google Ads strategy lets a three-solicitor practice outrank and out-convert them on the searches that matter.
Why Australian Law Firms Choose Madsun Media
We understand the regulatory environment, the research-heavy client journey, and the suburb-level competition that defines legal services in Australia. Our campaigns are built to win high-intent local searches — not just generate clicks.
Legal-Compliant Ad Copy
Every ad we write is reviewed against Australian Consumer Law and the Legal Profession Uniform Law advertising rules. No prohibited claims, no misleading conduct risk — and Google Ads policies met on the first submission, not after three rejections.
Local SEO + Suburb Rankings
We own your Google Business Profile, build suburb-level practice area pages, and dominate the Maps pack for searches like "family lawyer Parramatta" or "conveyancer inner west Sydney" — the high-intent local queries your ideal clients actually type.
Authority Content That Ranks
Legal guides, FAQ pages and explainer articles written by experienced legal content writers and optimised for search. Clients who find your content before contacting you arrive already educated, already trusting you, and far more likely to retain.
ROI Reporting in AUD
Monthly reports in Australian dollars showing cost per enquiry, cost per retained client, and return on ad spend — broken down by practice area and channel. No vanity metrics, no agency jargon — just the numbers your partnership meeting actually needs.

Services Built for Australian Law Firms
Six core services that work together to fill your client pipeline with qualified enquiries — every one priced in AUD, reported in AEST, and built around how Australians actually search for legal help.
Local SEO for Legal
Google Maps pack optimisation, suburb-level practice area pages, citation cleanup across AU legal directories, and Google Business Profile management — so clients searching "lawyer near me" find your firm first, not a national directory.
Google Ads — Legal Campaigns
Legal-compliant Google Search campaigns built around high-intent keywords. Separated by practice area and suburb, with negative keyword lists that filter out DIY searchers, students, and other non-client traffic that burns budget.
Content Marketing
Long-form legal guides, FAQ pages, and explainer articles that rank for informational queries and position your firm as the authoritative local expert — pulling clients into your funnel weeks before they are ready to call.
Website & Landing Pages
Trust-focused law firm websites and practice-area landing pages — barrister and solicitor profiles, accreditation badges, Google review embeds, clear calls-to-action, and fast mobile load times. Built to convert the research-phase visitor into an enquiry.
Reputation Management
Post-matter Google review request sequences, response templates for negative reviews, and ongoing monitoring across Google and Facebook. A higher star rating is one of the strongest conversion levers for legal services.
Analytics & ROI Reporting
Full attribution tracking from first click to retained client — call tracking, form tracking, Google Ads conversion data, and monthly AUD reporting so you always know which channel is paying for itself and which needs adjustment.
Practice Areas We Market Across Australia
Different practice areas, same playbook — own the local search, build authority content, convert the high-intent enquiry. We have run campaigns for every practice area below.
The Real Problem with Legal Referral Directories
Directories are not the enemy — renting your entire client pipeline through someone else's platform is. Here is what the economics actually look like.
Legal referral directories pitch themselves as a low-risk client acquisition channel: pay per lead, get clients, grow your practice. The reality, from the books of the law firms we have onboarded, is far less flattering. The same enquiry is typically sent to three, five, sometimes ten competing firms simultaneously. The prospective client selects based on whoever responds fastest, has the most reviews, or simply quotes the lowest fee — not necessarily the best solicitor. Your effective cost per retained client is rarely what the directory invoice suggests; by the time you factor in non-starters, price-shoppers, and out-of-jurisdiction enquiries, a AUD $200 lead typically represents closer to AUD $600 to AUD $900 in real cost per retained client.
The deeper structural problem is that you are building nothing. Every dollar spent on a directory produces one lead and no compounding asset. There is no ranking that keeps delivering next year, no content that builds authority, no brand signal that makes the next prospective client trust you before they even call. The day you stop paying, the enquiries stop arriving — and if the directory raises its rates (which they do), your cost structure moves and you have no alternative pipeline to fall back on.
The alternative is to own your channels. Local SEO, Google Maps rankings, practice-area content, and well-structured Google Ads are assets that compound. The first 90 days are slower than buying a directory listing — there is no pretending otherwise — but by month five or six, the cost per retained client from owned channels is typically 60–75% lower than the directory equivalent. We have taken Australian law firms from AUD $800+ per retained client on directories to AUD $180–$220 per retained client on owned channels, with the additional benefit that the enquiry pipeline keeps producing even in quarters where you reduce marketing spend.
We are not categorically anti-directory — for a brand-new practice with no organic presence they can bridge a gap in the first few months. We are anti-renting-for-life. Our standard engagement runs a directory in parallel for the first 60 to 90 days, builds owned channels alongside it, proves the economics in writing, then dials directory spend down as your own pipeline replaces it. Most of the law firms we work with have either eliminated or dramatically reduced their directory spend within six months.
Sydney Family Law Firm — 3 Solicitors
How a three-solicitor Sydney family law firm built a full digital presence from scratch and reached 18 new clients per month within six months — at AUD $38 cost per qualified lead.
The Challenge
A three-solicitor Sydney family law firm with no digital presence — no Google Business Profile, no website worth the name, no organic search rankings, and no paid search history. The practice relied entirely on word-of-mouth referrals which had begun to dry up as the principals aged. The firm had attempted a referral directory, spent AUD $4,200 over three months, and retained two clients from it. The principals had no visibility into where any enquiries were coming from and no framework for evaluating marketing spend.
Our Solution
We built the local SEO foundation first — a fully optimised Google Business Profile with weekly posts, suburb-level landing pages for the firm's three primary service areas, and citation listings across AU legal directories. Alongside that we launched legal-compliant Google Search Ads targeting family law keywords in the firm's geographic catchment, with separate ad groups for each practice sub-area. A reputation management programme generated 56 new Google reviews in the first six months. Full call and form tracking was implemented so every enquiry was attributed to a specific channel and keyword.

Australian Law Firms, Real Results
A few words from the solicitors and barristers we work with around Australia. Names abbreviated and identifying details kept light — legal professionals are appropriately discreet.
“We had a website that looked credible but generated almost no enquiries. Madsun rebuilt our local SEO, created suburb pages for our conveyancing practice, and launched Google Ads. Within four months we had tripled our organic enquiries and the cost per lead from Google Ads was a fraction of what we had been spending on a referral directory. The team understands legal advertising rules — our ads went live first time without a single policy rejection.”

Principal Solicitor, Sydney
“As a family law barrister in Brisbane, I was completely invisible online. Madsun built a focused local SEO strategy — Google Business Profile, suburb pages, content guides — and the enquiries started coming within 60 days. I now turn away clients I cannot fit in. The account manager is available in AEST hours and speaks plain English, not marketing jargon.”
R.P.
Family Law Barrister, Brisbane
“We were spending AUD $3,000 a month on a national legal directory and getting maybe two retained clients per month from it. Madsun switched that budget into Google Ads and Local SEO — same spend, same time period, seven retained clients per month. The ROI reporting is in Australian dollars and shows exactly which practice area is driving which revenue. Completely changed how we plan our marketing budget.”
